Selective Broadleaf Weed Killer TO CONTROL;

POISON IVY

There is an oil that is found in Poison Ivy called Urushiol. It is highly potent and is what makes this common woody vine “poisonous”- the urushiol (also found in Poison Oak and Poison Sumac) that is produced creates an itchy rash for those who come into direct contact with it.

The rash is called urushiol-induced contact dermatitis (but most people just call it Poison Ivy), and anyone who has had it can attest to the extreme itching, red skin, and sometimes burning sensations caused from the rash.

Poison Ivy can sometimes be difficult to categorize because its look and growth vary. Poison Ivy plants have initial leaves that are shiny and reddish in color. This occurs in the springtime, but new leaves are generally always red, no matter when they sprout. As it grows older, the shine and redness of the leaves fade. In the fall, Poison Ivy adopts typical Autumnal colors, making it hard to distinguish from other plants. Just because it is fall, however, do not be fooled- you can still catch the Poison Ivy rash from the plant. In the winter, the leaves have gone, leaving thin, twig-like stems, and yes, if you touch the twigs excessively, you can contract Poison Ivy even in winter.
Poison Ivy can grow and climb around a tree. Sometimes it crawls along the floor. There have been occasions when the plant has actually grown into a shrub or bush, with a “carpet” of Poison Ivy surrounding it along the ground. It is known to grow along the edges of fields, roads, and woods. A good rule to remember is if you notice three leaves, let it alone. Chances are likely that it is a Poison Ivy plant.
